Velocity by continuity (incompressible). Pump-suction working band ~0.75–2.5 m/s, ceiling ~2.4 m/s per ANSI/HI 9.6.6. A reduction that pushes suction velocity past the ceiling usually needs a larger upstream line or a gentler cone, not a steeper reducer.
