Top 20 Heavy Weight Drill Pipe Manufacturers Worldwide: A Buyer’s Shortlist

Last updated: October 2026

Heavy weight drill pipe manufacturers are companies that make HWDP for drilling programs; the best fit depends on the approved configuration. NOV and TSC offer documented North American options, COMMAND-SMFI and PMC offer French and Japanese options respectively. Hilong provides several options for construction and connections, while DP-Master publishes welded and integral designs. Synbase offers a catalog for export RFQs.

Heavy weight drill pipe (HWDP) provides a gradual transition between standard drill pipe and drill collars. Oilfield procurement begins with the approved drill string design. Match the specified body and tool joint dimensions, connection and manufacturing route. This compares public product lines and indicates the evidence potential buyers should review prior to placement of an order.

Quick picks

Six published HWDP options suit different purchasing enquiries.

Use these to route an enquiry toward a documented product option. They reflect published HWDP product lines and construction alternatives, rather than measured field performance or worldwide production rankings. Confirm the responsible factory and specified configuration prior to considering the source approved.

Published schedule example: NOV’s Standard, Tri-Spiral and Spiral-Wate HWDP.

  • Best for export RFQs comparing standard, spiral and integral hwdp: Synbase
  • Best for comparing joint-weight schedules: NOV / Grant Prideco
  • Best for a documented U.S. manufacturing process: Texas Steel Conversion
  • Best for French welded and optional integral production: COMMAND-SMFI
  • Best for Japanese welded and integral manufacturing: Petromaterials / PMC
  • Best for Singapore-coordinated welded and integral enquiries: DP-Master

How we selected the manufacturers

Official HWDP statements start a shortlist; factory and licence checks complete qualification.

Selection required a current official HWDP product line and an explicit company statement describing its own design or manufacture. Candidates were identified using Google. Company product pages, manufacturing descriptions, public filings and other sources provided the checks. Traders, directories, used equipment sellers and companies providing only adjacent products were excluded.

Sources were checked on October 7, 2026. Descriptions of companies below are based on attributed first-party company statements. This review doesn’t independently assess every factory, verify every current API license or confirm production slots. Factory-level confirmation at the order level is required. Historical records are identified by date and don’t necessarily indicate current approval.

“The Licensing Information Form (LIF) identifies products eligible for a Monogram License.”

Eligibility for a monogram license may differ from actually holding a monogram license. API’s Composite List indicates an active licensed location vs. an applicant. When a field can’t be established for the comparable company or brand, the table uses “Not publicly disclosed.” Plant cities, sales offices, incorporation dates and parent company histories aren’t substitutes for headquarters or founding dates.

The 20 entries represent distinct companies or groups with public manufacturing descriptions. NOV and Grant Prideco count once, as do PMC and its Cangzhou operation. “Best for” is an editorial selection compared to a published option, and doesn’t represent an independently verified superior option. No comparable global hwdp-only output ranking was established.

The HWDP Maker-and-Route Roster

Read the HWDP roster by identity, product scope, scenario fit and published limitations.

The comparison below keeps the limitations of the studied company next to its main products. The main products column indicates hwdp, and a broad product drill-pipe range doesn’t necessarily imply an equally broad HWDP range. Official website addresses are provided in plain text. Website links are provided in the profiles that follow.

Product eligibility has a separate basis: API’s HWDP licensing scope. Inclusion in this comparison does not establish an active manufacturer licence.

Publisher’s entry: Synbase

Synbase publishes three HWDP construction options; confirm the factory and agreed drawing.

Synbase’s published hwdp options allow an export buyer to initiate an enquiry for construction. Their catalog describes Standard, Spiral and Integral builds, with body diameters from 2⅞ to 6⅝ inches. Final purchasing decisions are made after confirmation of the manufacturing site and the inspection documentation offered for the order.

1. Synbase: Best for export RFQs comparing Standard, Spiral and Integral HWDP

Disclosure: This guide is published by Synbase. We list ourselves first because this is our website, not because we claim to be the market leader. The other 19 manufacturers are grouped by what they are best for, in no particular order within each group.

The Synbase heavy weight drill pipe catalogue describes three build options and material and inspection documentation choices. Its company timeline places the mainland Synbase subsidiary in 2013; the parent group’s earlier history is a separate fact. The published options support an RFQ comparing construction alternatives. Potential disadvantage: The public hwdp page doesn’t identify the responsible HWDP factory, its product-specific license or configuration fatigue data, so obtain these before approving supply.

International makers with documented HWDP portfolios

International HWDP enquiries can target documented weight, process, plant and construction options.

This group describes published manufacturing routes in North America, Europe, Japan, India and China. The profiles summarize each company’s own current catalog or factory documents. They’re helpful for an initial technical shortlist. They don’t provide information on current stock, independent performance evaluations or a license for the quoted facility.

2. NOV / Grant Prideco: Best for published joint-weight comparisons

NOV’s HWDP page documents Standard, Tri-Spiral and Spiral-Wate designs. Nominal 31-foot, 5-inch NC50 rows show weights of 1,562, 1,623 and 1,834 lb per joint, respectively. These help in settling differences for weight-based offers vs. ordered joints. Tri-Spiral has a tool-joint bore different from the other two rows, so the same body OD and connection name don’t make these configurations interchangeable.

3. Texas Steel Conversion: Best for documented US manufacturing processes

TSC publishes HWDP from 3.500 to 6.625 inches and describes its manufacturing operations. Auditing a plant on forging, heat treatment, threading and inspection processes is another opportunity. Texas Steel Conversion’s (TSC) company history identifies its Houston headquarters and operations starting in 1975. TSC potential disadvantage: Product overview doesn’t provide a complete joint-weight schedule. Ask for an actual connection and body drawing before interpreting a tonne-based offer.

4. Drill Pipe International: Best for US HWDP enquiries up to 5½ inches

DPI’s process page describes manufacturing at its Baytown operation. The official Jindal product description limits HWDP to 5½ inches. DPI is a relevant enquiry when the approved design fits that published envelope. DPI potential disadvantage: its larger ordinary drill-pipe range can’t be treated as evidence that larger HWDP is available.

5. COMMAND-SMFI: Best for French welded and optional integral production

COMMAND-SMFI’s HWDP page lists products from 2⅞ to 6⅝ inches and separately describes body and tool-joint materials. Welded construction is the stated standard route; integral and nonmagnetic options are also described. French production offers a documented manufacturing route to investigate during qualification. COMMAND-SMFI potential disadvantage: integral production is optional because of plant availability, so it needs explicit confirmation rather than a generic catalogue reference.

6. Petromaterials / PMC: Best for Japanese welded and integral manufacturing

PMC’s official product catalogue lists welded and integral HWDP. Its Wakayama factory brochure supplies manufacturing context, while the company profile identifies Tokyo head office and establishment in 1994. Buyers seeking Japanese production should name the manufacturing site in the order rather than rely on group identity. PMC potential disadvantage: the brochures don’t establish current stock or a confirmed production slot.

7. Oil Country Tubular Limited: Best for Indian welded, integral and spiral enquiries

OCTL describes its own HWDP manufacture including welded and integral construction and spiral options. The page describes inspection processes and identifies AISI 1340 welded bodies and AISI 4145HM tool joints. Other reference materials suggest an enquiry on hwdp manufacture in India. Potential disadvantage: The present production slot and commercial availability need confirmation; a product page or annual report listing doesn’t guarantee delivered output.

8. DP-Master: Best for Singapore-coordinated welded and integral enquiries

DP-Master states that it manufactures standard and spiralled HWDP from 3½ to 6⅝ inches. Its page distinguishes friction-welded standard construction from integral AISI 4137H/4145H modified alloy-steel bars. The contact page separates Singapore head office from the Jiangyin manufacturing plant in China. DP-Master potential disadvantage: the published HWDP range doesn’t include 2⅞ inches, so a smaller-size requirement needs separate confirmation.

Specialists in connection, construction and length options

Specialist HWDP enquiries need connection, construction, length and order-specific evidence.

These companies publish specific designs of hwdps that enable a more targeted engineering interrogation. For example, a request for the ordered geometry and performance could follow the specification of a special name or a spiral profile or a nonmagnetic design. The company statements below do not establish universal fatigue resistance or suitability for every drilling condition.

9. Hilong: Best for multiple HWDP connection options

Hilong’s regional page currently lists several connection schedules for integral and welded hwdp, including sizes 4, 4½, 5 and 5½ inches. This is often useful when a drilling program requires a connection-specific discussion. Potential disadvantage: The Canadian regional office doesn’t identify a manufacturing site for a given offer. Establish both site and manufacturing configuration before qualification.

10. Jiangsu Shuguang / JSH: Best for tri-spiral HWDP enquiries

JSH defines hwdp design and manufacture and publishes a tri-spiral option. Buyers can use that definition to request an upset geometry and the corresponding joint schedule. A spiral name alone doesn’t establish defined improvement in Hole Cleaning or torque. JSH potential disadvantage: Complete order specific weight and connection information is established through a request for quotation and not a product headline.

11. Fenglei: Best for comparing integral and inertia-welded routes

Fenglei publishes HWDP dimensional tables covering 2⅞ to 6⅝ inches. Its official introduction dates the business to 1968 and describes integral and inertia-friction-welded manufacture. That distinction allows buyers to compare the requested construction route with the offered process. Potential disadvantage: current delivery and qualification evidence still require a configuration-specific offer.

12. Shanxi Huanjie: Best for integral HWDP sourcing

The official site of Huanjie identifies manufacture in Shouyang and lists integral hwdp. An integral requirement provides an enquiry with a construction route. Request finished-joint drawings, inspection scope and heat treatment records tied to the production site. Potential disadvantage: a public dimensional and joint weight schedule wasn’t established in this review.

13. Tianhe: Best for standard, spiral and nonmagnetic options

Tianhe’s HWDP portfolio details standard and spiral products as well as nonmagnetic products. A family of products that’s distinct from the rest can aid an engineer in isolating the requirements for standard alloy-steel from the requirements for a nonmagnetic product. Potential disadvantage: Properties and configuration need to be verified by a separate technical assessment.

14. PKNM: Best for published custom-length enquiries

PKNM publishes HWDP from 3½ to 5½ inches, with a 31-foot standard length and custom lengths of 26–37.7 feet. Its history page dates the Perm business to 1993. A published length envelope gives buyers a concrete basis for handling and tally enquiries. Potential disadvantage: its stated diameter range stops at 5½ inches.

Chinese manufacturers for specification-led export enquiries

Export HWDP qualification depends on the factory, drawing, process route and inspection scope.

Published construction routes exist for the Chinese manufacturers that offer hwdp solutions. However, country of origin doesn’t establish acceptance. These profiles use each company’s own manufacturing descriptions. Compare the factory responsible for the order with the inspection dossier and the actual drawing. No current API license, delivery promise, or independent performance rating is inferred.

15. Shaanxi Taihe: Best for welded and integral Chinese production enquiries

Taihe describes research, development and production and lists welded and integral HWDP options. Its published HWDP range covers 3½ to 6⅝ inches. Shaanxi Taihe is a separate company from Tianhe; similar names shouldn’t cause duplicated or misdirected enquiries. Potential disadvantage: the exact connection drawing and joint mass need an order-specific schedule.

16. ELITE: Best for construction-route comparisons

The present ELITE product site gives welded hwdp, and the integral product page offers forging. Those separate descriptions allow buyers to question how the ordered HWDP is manufactured. Use the current brand name until the legal manufacturer is confirmed. Potential disadvantage: this site’s continuity with historical Jiangsu Elite records wasn’t verified, so legacy dates or approvals shouldn’t be ported.

17. Longway: Best for published in-house HWDP processing

Longway states that it manufactures HWDP and lists welded and integral choices from 3½ to 6⅝ inches. Its company page describes tools production and processing in Hebei Jinzhou. The stated in-house route provides specific operations to inspect during supplier qualification. Potential disadvantage: current delivery and configuration-specific fatigue data aren’t established by the public pages.

18. Shenlong: Best for integrated forging-process enquiries

Shenlong states steel, forging, and processing facilities, and has hwdp in its portfolio. These process claims give a basis to inquire about the manufacturing sites. Obtain the HWDP-specific drawing and route to assess which operations apply to the ordered product. Potential disadvantage: the public material reviewed doesn’t provide enough detail on the HWDP construction route and dimensional schedule.

19. Saigao: Best for drawing-led HWDP enquiries

Saigao provides an hwdp page and has a manufacturing catalog in the same site. Its integral product heading is followed by prose about friction welding, a discrepancy that’s important to the purchase specification. Ask the manufacturer to resolve the discrepancy in a signed drawing and process statement. Potential disadvantage: the construction ambiguity isn’t resolved in the public site; don’t order against the heading alone.

20. Shandong Tuoda: Best for forged integral spiral HWDP

Tuoda describes integral spiral HWDP made with AISI 4145H and hot forging and heat treatment. Its Liaocheng contact location supports an enquiry to the Chinese manufacturer, without establishing a separately verified headquarters. Buyers should connect the material designation to the ordered heat and manufacturing records. Potential disadvantage: the public product page lacks a complete joint-weight and connection-drawing schedule.

How to choose a heavy weight drill pipe manufacturer

Compare HWDP offers by factory, geometry, material, standards, inspection and joint weight.

Match your order-related evidence to the approved hwdp design and select a manufacturer. A supplier’s catalog range doesn’t verify connection compatibility, material condition or fatigue suitability. The checks below turn a supplier’s proposal into a comparable manufacturing and acceptance dossier; the drilling engineer must set operating limits.

  1. Identify the responsible factory. Put the legal manufacturer and physical manufacturing location in the RFQ, purchase order and inspection plan. If API markings are required, check the current status of that facility and the HWDP product scope in the Composite List. An applicant isn’t an active licensee; a sales office isn’t a production site.
  2. Specify the complete configuration. Record body OD and ID, tool joint OD and bore, pin and box connection, finished length and any center upset. For spiral geometry, include all details. For example, NOV’s 5-inch NC50 rows have different joint weights and tool joint bores. Specify a drawing revision, not merely “5-inch HWDP.”
  3. State the manufacturing route and material condition. Identify welded assembly construction from integral bar construction and state body and tool-joint materials separately. OCTL defines AISI 1340 bodies with AISI 4145HM tool joints for their welded offering. An integral label should agree with the signed process statement, especially when public prose is in conflict.
  4. Name the standard revision set. API’s current published updates list Spec 7-1 second-edition Addendum 1 (March 2025) and Errata 2 (November 2025), and Spec 7-2 second-edition Addendum 3 (September 2025). Confirm the edition and amendments in your order. Ordinary API 5DP drill pipe terminology doesn’t establish HWDP compliance.
  5. Define inspection evidence before manufacture. Require traceability of heat numbers for body and joints, materials test records, heat treatment records and the agreed scope of nondestructive testing. For a welded assembly, require records of the weld process and weld zone inspection. Request records of machine and gauge calibration, thread gauging and the dimensional checks included in the final dossier. The agreed standard and engineering specification set the acceptance limits.
  6. Separate catalogue properties from service qualification. Configure a sour-service, high-strength or non-magnetic designation with evidence specific to the configuration. Match the material condition, connection type and qualification documentation to drilling conditions. The discussion on drillstring selection in historical VAM engineers’ sour-service discussion doesn’t define a universal hwdp hardness, torque or life limit.
  7. Comparisons should be made on the delivered joint, not a loose unit price. Reconcile quantity, adjusted mass, finished length and quote unit prior to comparing prices per tonne, foot or joint. Be sure to include specified hardbanding, thread protection, inspection witnessing, packaging, and freight, and the documentation requested. Require these items to be included or explicitly priced before comparing the scope of competing offers.
  8. Confirm the production slot and recovery route. Request a dated manufacturing schedule and inspection hold points. Get the name of the individual who’s handling a rejected joint. For repair or replacement requests, confirm the connection-specific arrangements. A broad corporate service network or recent filings don’t guarantee available capacity, stock, or a specific delivery date.

The 31-Foot Quote Check: NOV publishes 1,562 lb for a nominal 31-foot, 5-inch NC50 Standard HWDP joint, approximately 0.709 metric tonne by unit conversion. Its Tri-Spiral and Spiral-Wate rows list 1,623 and 1,834 lb. Because geometry differs, use these figures to expose missing specification fields, not to calculate interchangeable joints or a market price.

HWDP RFQ field sheet

For the oil and gas industry, a drill pipe product range is a screening aid. Ask the manufacturer of drill string components to quote the approved design for the specified section of the drill string. The following fields make engineering assumptions and commercial exclusions visible.

Buyer-supplied inputs; this sheet does not set operating limits.
RFQ field What to provide and check
Project and operator Identify the oil well, operator and drilling services contractor for the oil and gas exploration project. State which tubular products, drilling equipment and drilling tools are included in this order.
Application and trajectory State the drilling applications, including horizontal drilling or extended-reach wells, and describe the specific drilling conditions. Various drilling applications need different engineering checks; “challenging drilling” and “demanding drilling conditions” are descriptions, not acceptance criteria.
Transition design For a conventional transition assembly, HWDP is positioned between the drill collars and the standard drill pipe. Identify how the heavier and stiffer intermediate member fits the approved string; additional weight at the drill bit must follow the engineer’s design.
Loads and circulation Supply the approved axial, bending and torsional load cases and the torque and drilling fluid envelope. Include flow and pressure-loss requirements through the bore and around the pipe, with the expected downhole environment.
Manufacturing responsibilities Separate steel manufacturing from finished drill pipe manufacturing. Identify who produces the steel pipe or bar, pipe body, tool joints and assembled product, including subcontracted operations and the responsible final manufacturer.
Material and inspection Specify material grade, heat-treatment condition and traceability. Ordinary drill pipe grades do not define HWDP requirements. Compare documents headed “grades and sizes” with the ordered drawing and the inspection dossier.
Dimensions and mass Compare drill pipe specifications and the offered range of sizes: outside diameter, bore, upset geometry, nominal weight and finished length. Record the pin and box details and configuration-specific joint mass instead of assuming an entire range of drill pipe shares one schedule.
Construction and standard Confirm whether the heavy weight drill pipe is designed as a welded assembly or an integral drill string member. Replace a generic “standard API” label with the agreed specification, edition and amendments; the signed route must match the supplied product.
Availability and order scope Ask whether the specified pipe is available from stock or requires manufacture. Identify inspection hold points, production dates, thread protection and freight. Products used in drilling operations should have order-specific records, not only a broad drilling industry brochure.
Performance evidence For drill pipe applications in modern drilling, request configuration-specific evidence behind claims of drilling efficiency or drilling performance. A catalogue cannot establish suitability to meet different drilling requirements without engineering review and agreed qualification evidence.

NOV geometry check. The entries in the schedules below are for selected hwdp joints and all masses are based on NOV’s nominal 31 ft. All masses use its nominal 31 ft basis; Standard mass is adjusted weight, while the other schedules give approximate mass. The metric dimensions are conversion values rounded to two decimal places and aren’t manufacturing tolerances.

NOV catalogue examples; configurations require their own approved drawings.
Configuration Nominal body OD Tool-joint OD Tool-joint bore Published mass per joint
Standard 3.500 in / 88.90 mm 4.750 in / 120.65 mm 2.0625 in / 52.39 mm 795 lb
Standard 5.000 in / 127.00 mm 6.625 in / 168.28 mm 3.000 in / 76.20 mm 1,562 lb
Standard 6.625 in / 168.28 mm 8.000 in / 203.20 mm 4.500 in / 114.30 mm 2,214 lb
Tri-Spiral 3.500 in / 88.90 mm 4.750 in / 120.65 mm 2.1875 in / 55.56 mm 839 lb
Tri-Spiral 5.000 in / 127.00 mm 6.625 in / 168.28 mm 3.0625 in / 77.79 mm 1,623 lb
Tri-Spiral 6.625 in / 168.28 mm 8.000 in / 203.20 mm 4.500 in / 114.30 mm 2,315 lb
Spiral-Wate 3.500 in / 88.90 mm 4.875 in / 123.83 mm 2.250 in / 57.15 mm 942 lb
Spiral-Wate 5.000 in / 127.00 mm 6.625 in / 168.28 mm 3.000 in / 76.20 mm 1,834 lb
Spiral-Wate 6.625 in / 168.28 mm 8.000 in / 203.20 mm 5.000 in / 127.00 mm 2,275 lb

For an illustrative buyer evaluating two 5-inch NC50 offers, the next step would be to request the joint-weight schedules and joint drawings for each offer. If one offer uses tonnes and the other uses joints, conversion should be made only after the finished configuration and mass are agreed. The comparison should show identical scope and contractual requirements, including the inspection dossier.

Frequently asked questions

Questions asked by a potential customer regarding a comparison of alternative technical solutions, evidence of availability and the basis for comparison, distinguish published options from independently verified options. No defensible, universal winner or public price band exists among the options reviewed. Configuration-specific RFQs are the next step to buy.

Which is the best HWDP manufacturer for a directional drilling program?

NOV is a viable initial source of comparative info on Standard, Tri-Spiral and Spiral-Wate hwdp models. Public tables provide geometry and joint-weight data to assist buyers’ evaluation. NOV’s catalog doesn’t determine if a particular model is appropriate for your well: the drilling engineer must approve the complete string design, connection and material condition. Compare the configuration with signed proposals from other manufacturers, and require the responsible Factory, Inspection plan and Performance data prior to ordering.

Which is the best HWDP manufacturer for Japanese production?

PMC is an initial source for Japanese welded and Integral hwdp because their product catalog and the Wakayama factory brochure have info on those models. Indicate the plant location rather than assume all of a multinational company’s products are manufactured in Japan. The brochure doesn’t confirm if inventory is available, lead time or if there’s an open production slot. Ask for a dated quote, ordered drawings and inspection records prior to assuming that source is approved.

Who is the largest heavy weight drill pipe manufacturer in the world?

A largest HWDP manufacturer cannot be identified from the comparable public production data reviewed. NOV, Hilong and others publish HWDP portfolios; however, a broad tubular production figure may include regular drill pipe, collars or other products. Revenues, factory size and overall group production don’t establish category only figures. A defensible answer would require current HWDP production figures measured on the same basis across manufacturers, for the same reporting period and with the responsible company scope identified.

Are Chinese heavy weight drill pipe manufacturers reliable?

Chinese manufacturers can be vetted similarly to other sources using product and factory checks. Reliability can’t be attributed to a manufacturer based solely on their country. Require a signed configuration, responsible manufacturing site, traceable materials, agreed inspection evidence and current product-specific licensing if your contract so requires.

How much does heavy weight drill pipe cost?

A comparable public HWDP price range wasn’t established in this review. Price is influenced by construction, dimensions, connection, material condition and hardbanding, as well as inspection and delivery scope. When seeking offers, compare like-for-like prices per finished joint, with mass and length stated, rather than disconnected marketplace prices.

What is the difference between an HWDP manufacturer and a supplier?

A manufacturer accepts responsibility for the specified production process; a supplier can purchase and resell the finished product. A supplier can still coordinate an order, but the contract should identify the responsible manufacturer and production site for material traceability and acceptance records.

Turn the shortlist into a comparable RFQ

Comparable HWDP offers need the same drawing, connection, length, manufacturing route and records.

The best option is the manufacturer whose signed proposal matches the approved hwdp configuration, and provides the required manufacturing evidence. Send body and tool-joint dimensions, connection, finished length, construction route, material condition and inspection scope together. Missing fields should be resolved before commercial offers are compared or a production slot is accepted.

Refer to Synbase’s Standard, Spiral and Integral hwdp options to construct an enquiry. For the ordinary drill-pipe component of a drilling string, consult the API 5DP drill-pipe product page. Identify the required documents and include factory identification in the request for quotation.

References & Sources

API scope, company statements, historical context and buyer verification have different evidence roles.

Institutional sources explain product scope, licence status and standards updates. The official product and company documents linked in each profile support only the attributed manufacturer statements. No factory audit, field test or current licence verification for all 20 companies is claimed.
